Foam & Polystyrene Packaging

MEK-free ink for soft, solvent-sensitive surfaces

EPS and XPS foam, insulation board and protective packaging manufacturers need legible codes on soft, uneven surfaces that can't withstand contact printing pressure without denting, crushing or tearing — and many standard inks contain MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), a solvent that dissolves and pits polystyrene on contact.

RNJet offers a MEK-free ink formulation that prints a clean, legible code without eating into the foam surface, applied by piezo printers that mark without touching the part, from up to 15 mm away. RNJet thermal inkjet printers handle carton overwrap coding alongside it — without the daily cleaning continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers require.

Why RNJet for Foam & Polystyrene

Built for fragile surfaces & production-floor reality

MEK-Free Ink Formulation

Won't dissolve or pit polystyrene the way standard MEK-based inks can — a clean, legible code every time.

Non-Contact Printing

Piezo printers mark from up to 15 mm away, protecting soft foam surfaces from contact damage.

Large, High-Visibility Codes

Characters up to 144 mm tall stay legible on foam board and insulation panels.

Simpler Than CIJ

Cartridge or bulk ink systems with no daily nozzle cleaning or makeup fluid.

FAQ

Foam & Polystyrene Coding & Marking FAQ

EPS/XPS foam board, insulation panels, packaging inserts, foam containers and coolers, and the cartons and pallets those products ship on.

No. RNJet offers a MEK-free ink formulation, so it won't dissolve or pit the polystyrene surface the way standard MEK-based inks can, and piezo printers mark without touching the surface, from up to 15 mm away, avoiding the contact pressure that can dent or crush soft foam.

Large character piezo printers like the RNJet 72 and E1-140 print up to 144 mm tall, with high-capacity 430 mL cartridges available on the XL series for long runs.

RNJet thermal inkjet and piezo printers avoid the daily cleaning, makeup fluid and nozzle maintenance that CIJ printers require, while printing comparable or higher-resolution codes.

Yes. RNJet printers mount directly on new or existing lines and trigger from a photo-eye or PLC signal without slowing production.
